Having a sense of purpose is important to succeed in life. The purpose of something is the reason for which it exists or the manufacturer's original intent for making it.
Man is a product of God's creative ability, the Scriptures states that man was sculpted from the earth and the breath of God impacted into him a living being after God's image and likeness (Genesis 1:26, 2:7). Man is not a product of Evolution. The value of man revolves around the understanding of his divine origin (Identity). Man's identity transcends beyond scientific classification as mammals. He is an extension of the Almighty, a manifestation of the God head. We remain God's creation, created for His purpose (Romans 8:28).
Man (male and female) has the tendency to attribute ownership of life to self. This is why we come up with the phrase, "it's my life, I can do what ever I like" No! A thousand times no. It is not your life, the breath is God's and the opportunity to express it is a trust of which we all will give account. Understanding God's ownership of life is the controlling factor of living a purposeful life. If you own yourself, you will live to fulfill your selfish purpose devoid of God's purpose.
God wants us to discover why we were born, so that we can fulfill our purpose. A sense of purpose gives life meaning. It moves one beyond just existence to a fulfilling and productive life.
We must go to God to discover the purpose for our existence. God who created you knows how He designed you to operate. He understand His thoughts towards you and His purpose for your life.
God has a global view and purpose of bringing us into the world. There is a problem for us to solve here. Hence the reason why He inspires some to invent, some to research, and some to innovate over the existing norm. What are you created for? Make effort to discover. It is never too late. We are unique individually, not a copy or duplicate of another.
We must embrace the subject of PURPOSE because it is the reason for our existence. We are born with a purpose to fulfill God's Universal agenda. Each of us has a contribution to this agenda (that we may call our assignment) and life is about fulfilling the assignment. We are responsible for discovering the assignment (Proverbs 25:2). Understanding your assignment stems from discovering your POTENTIALS (unexposed ability, hidden talents, what you can do that you haven't done, etc) because a man's assignment is closely related to his potentials. Myles Munroe says "Potential is the sum of who you are that you are yet to reveal". The potential of something is always related to the potential of the source from which it came. If God is your maker (manufacturer), you must go to Him if you want to know your potential. Go to Him through the Holy Spirit who can reveal to you the qualities that makes for success and the characteristics of your potential. He will also reveal to you ways to avoid wasting or abusing your potentials. Relationship with the source is the key to understanding and releasing your potentials. You must establish a relationship with God through Jesus Christ.
You can only be successful when you find purpose in God. And so, discover your purpose and work towards it, and you will be successful.
